Create Optimum Conditions for Learning to Read - Grades 1 to Adult
Research tells us that reading approaches that work for one student can be disastrous for another, because every person has a unique learning style for reading, or reading style. By identifying and teaching to a student's reading style, teachers can create optimum learning conditions.

The Reading Style Inventory, or RSI, is the first and only diagnostic questionnaire that reveals a student's reading style. RSI Individual Profiles not only describe a student's reading style, they also list the most effective reading metods, materials, and strategies for that youngster. And RSI Group Profiles condense and compile reading styles information so that students can be grouped for on-target reading instruction.

The RSI was developed by Dr. Marie Carbo who recieved the First National Dissertation Award from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) for her pioneering work in reading styles. Dr. Carbo was honored for "contributiing the most in the nation to the field of curriculum and instruction."

The Reading Style Inventory (RSI) is a diagnostic questionnaire that produces seven different individual and group RSI profiles. The RSI Online sorts through the student’s answers to the RSI and matches those answers to the most appropriate reading methods, materials, and strategies for that student’s reading style.

    The RSI:

  • identifies an individual’s learning style for reading, or “reading style”
  • recommends reading methods, reading materials, and reading strategies that are compatible with the individual’s identified reading style
  • provides detailed descriptions of the individual’s learning strengths and weaknesses, best reading strategies, and reading methods to produce success
  • includes RSI group profiles that indicate a group’s reading style tendencies and overall best reading strategies
  • produces an RSI profile for parents of their child along with a parent booklet that describes the child’s reading style and most effective reading strategies
  • generates a customized letter for parents

Fifteen years of research tell us that RSI recommendations increase reading motivation and achievement. The RSI reduces hit-or-miss decisions and increases on-target decisions for AYP and NCLB compliance.

Now, with the RSI, you'll understand why Rosita can't learn phonics, but Joshua and Alysse thrive on it
And you will know why Alysse is disruptive during her reading group but becomes engrossed while playing a reading game... why Rosita can't read in a noisy room but Julie can... why Cindy can follow written directions but not verbal directions... why Linda becomes confused by all the choices of books in the library... why Daniel is a model student in the reading group but can't read independently... why Frank can only remember words if he traces over them with his finger...

After you adminster the RSI and receive your computer printouts, you'll know why. And you'll know which specific strategies and reading methods are the most effective for your student or child.

Alysse is a tactile learner. She learns best with reading games and activities.
Joshua is an auditory learner. He learns best with taped books and phonics.
Rosita is unmotivated. She needs reading material that interests her.
