All people have different learning strengths and
weaknesses. For example, some are strongly auditory
and learn phonics easily. Others are strongly visual and
learn quickly with visual reading methods. Some people
have many learning strengths and can learn with most
reading methods. Others have few strengths. They must
be taught with the precise reading methods that match
their strengths or they are placed at risk.

According to the International Reading Association in
their publication, Making a Difference Means Making It
Different: Honoring Children’s Rights to Excellent
Reading Instruction
(2000):

Because children learn differently, teachers must be familiar
with a wide range of proven methods for helping children
gain these skills. They also must have thorough knowledge
of the children they teach, so they can provide the appropriate
balance of methods needed for each child.
