Preparation for Administering the RSI-P (Grades 1-2)

  1. Take two to three weeks to develop rapport. The child's teacher, or someone who has good rapport with the student should lay the groundwork.
  2. Lay the groundwork for the concept of style before proceeding: The book Rose and Tulip, by Cynthia Fels, is available from NRSI and helps to lay a foundation for administering the RSI.
  3. Provide experiences for 2-4 weeks in:
  • Music in the classroom
  • Lights dimmed
  • Snacks
  • Informal design areas
  • Grouping patterns for class work
  • Use of manipulatives (T/K)

Special Tips for Kindergartners

To determine the reading style of children at this level, have parents complete and score for their child the Modality and Global/Analytic Checklists, available in What Every Principal Should Know About Teaching Reading.
