General Recommendations for Administering the RSI
Before administering the RSI:
Provide experiences for 2-4 weeks in:

  • Music in the classroom
  • Lights dimmed
  • Snacks
  • Informal design areas
  • Grouping patterns for class work
  • Use of manipulatives (T/K)

Administering the RSI:

  1. The RSI-I and the RSI-A are not standardized norm-referenced tests, nor are they reading aptitude tests. The teacher may read any or all of the inventory to the student or students
    and may provide needed explanations.
  2. If there is any chance that the student cannot read an item and determine its meaning, the teacher should read the entire question to the student. Even though this is not the usual procedure in administering an inventory, the reading ability of the student should not influence the answers given.
  3. The RSI may be given in one or more sittings, depending upon the attention span of the individual student. The RSI should not be timed. Each youngster should be permitted the amount of time needed to complete the entire questionnaire.
  4. Most students require about thirty-five to forty-five minutes, with some requiring more time and some less. The students in grades five through twelve generally needed approximately twenty minutes.
  5. Each of the RSI items must receive one answer. Students work consecutively and may go back to an item to change the answer. The teacher, too, can go back to an item, if necessary.
  6. Students’ questions should be answered before and during the test, but students should not be permitted to discuss their RSI selections among themselves as they take the RSI. Advise youngsters experiencing difficulty in selecting an answer to choose the answer closest to their own preference. The accuracy of the computerized reading style diagnosis and prescription depends upon the truthfulness of a student’s responses.
